Just How Did All This Come About?
This
quartet is
young and
have only been singing together for about a
year although there are decades of experience behind them.
It
was the fall of 2002, Kent, Eddie and
Darrell were singing in a quartet named
“7th & Main” with a
wonderful lead by the name Ron Mallow. Business demands prevented Ron from
participating as much
as he and the
other members of the quartet desired. Feeling
as though he was holding back the quartet, Ron
offered to step
out of the group to allow for a full-time lead.
Curt
Angel was singing with the Noise
Boys out of the Central States District, but
not with a local quartet at home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Curt expressed an interest with this group, they got
together and
sang a few tags, talked a little, sang a few more tags, decided to give
it a
shot and sang even more tags. Cooligans
was formed, bringing together over 100 years of
combined
quartet singing experience.
Due
to performance commitments with the Noise
Boys Quartet, Curt was unable
to
attend the Northeast Division contest with the Cooligans.
This was a qualifying competition to allow
them to compete in the 2003 Fall District Convention in the
Southwestern
District. Not wanting to be unable to compete for the Southwestern
District
Quartet Championship, the guys called upon former lead, Ron Mallow, to
fill in
at this Division Contest in Little Rock, AR. On
short notice, Cooligans entered this contest with Ron
and qualified.
Following
this division contest, Curt got back on board as lead and Cooligans got
to
work. They selected Sally Beck
as their coach and what a coach she is. Sally
sang baritone with the 1987 Queens of Harmony (Sweet
Adeline’s International Quartet Champions) Ginger ‘n Jazz out of
Oklahoma
City, OK. Sally’s late husband, Ronnie (Steve)
Beck, sang with Kent, Eddie and Mo Rector in the Second Generation back in
the late 60’s and early 70’s.
Cooligans
entered the Southwestern District Quartet Competition in October of
2003 in
Corpus Christi, TX and walked away with the Quartet Championship on
this, their
very first attempt.
In
March of 2004, Cooligans entered the Southwestern District
International
Preliminaries Contest in San Marcos, TX … a competition which
determines
eligibility to compete on the International Level.
Approximately 50 quartets are selected out of
thousands
around
the world to compete for the International Quartet Championship each
year.
Cooligans
competed in Louisville, KY on June 30, 2004 and placed a VERY
respectable 36th and represent the Southwestern District (a/k/a: The
District of Champions). See the News Page for the story and
photos.
